China’s western Qinghai province was rattled by a number of quakes Wednesday, killing at least 400 people and injuring thousands, according to local news reports.
Qinghai, located near Tibet, was hit by a 6.9-magnitude quake, according to measurements by the U.S. Geological Survey. The quake resulted in a large number of people ending up trapped under toppled structures and rubble. Local news sources estimate that more than 10,000 rescue workers are currently making efforts to rescue those trapped.
According to the China Earthquake Networks Center, the quake was centered in the county of Yushu, located in China’s Qinghai province, with the strongest quake measuring at approximately 7.1-magnitude.
