6.4 magnitude earthquake hits Taiwan

A moderately strong earthquake rocked Taiwan on Thursday morning, resulting in electricity loss in the area, along with a textile factory fire.

The earthquake, which was measured to have a 6.4 magnitude (as compared to Chile’s 8.8 magnitude earthquake), occurred at 8:18 a.m. near the city of Kaohsiung. Since then, the Central Weather Bureau has recorded approximately 120 more aftershocks.

According to local police investigations, the earthquake resulted in minimal injuries. Electric service, however, has been knocked out for more than 500,000 individuals. Taipei was also affected, although reports seem to indicate that there was minimal destructive effect.

However, a fire that occurred in a textile plant in Tainan County because of the earthquake resulted in an estimated $3 million in damages and lost property.
