An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.5 shook the Northern California coast on Saturday afternoon, resulting to power interruption in several communities in the area.
The United States Geological Survey reported that the tremor hit a spot 27 miles from Eureka and occurred at about 4:27 pm.
Spokeswoman of the California Emergency Management Agency Lori Newquist said, “The state’s warning center hasn’t received any reports of injuries or major damage.”
The power in Arcata, the town where the Humboldt State University is located, was knocked out, and many residents said that objects hanging on their walls had been knocked off.
About an hour and a half after the quake, five aftershocks were felt, the strongest at magnitude 3.8.
There is no threat of a tsunami occurring due to the earthquake, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said.
