Las Vegas based Shelby American Inc., is set to unveil an 800-horsepower version of the Ford Mustang during the New York Auto Show later this month. The 2012 Shelby GT500 Super Snake will be produced by Shelby for Ford Motors.
The Mustangs Daily revealed that although the Super Snake will only have 750 horsepower, the car will come with an optional Kenne Bell supercharger option that will add an extra 50 horsepower. The 5.4-liter V-8 engine will bring out 750 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque. It is packed with a new Borla exhaust, a specially designed Alcoa 20-inch wheels and forged Shelby/Baer six-piston calipers paired with a cross-drilled and slotted rotors.
Aside from that, the Shelby GT500 will come with a new, unique hood, front brake ducts, side scoops, matte-finish striping, as well as Super Snake logos and plaques all over the car. Shelby American Inc. revealed that it can be driven on public roads on all the 50 states. The 2011 Super Snake will cost around $80,000, including an independent purchase of a car from Ford Motors, the factory-manufactured Shelby GT500, as well as the necessary upgrades.
John Luft, President of Shelby American, revealed that their company has a rich history at the New York International Auto Show. It unveiled its first car during the event in 1962 and 1968. Shelby also rolled out the Shelby GT500KR and Shelby Hertz GT-H, in 2008 and 2006, respectively.
The original agreement between Ford Motors and Shelby American was terminated in 1969. It brought about several Mustang-based performance cars amounting to millions of dollars today. Ford hired the services of Carroll Shelby, the founder of the company, to help them in designing the Ford GT40 race car, the main influence of the new Ford GT. In 2003, Ford and Shelby American renewed its partnership resulting to the production of a new line of Shelby Mustangs, some produced by Ford and others by Shelby American.
