The trial of the suspects in the September 11 attacks will be held in a New York City federal courtroom, the Obama administration announced on Friday.
The mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and his co-conspirators, Walid Bin Attash, Ramzi Binalshibh, Mustafa al-Hawsawi and Ali Abdul Aziz Ali, are detained in Guantanamo Bay and will be brought to the U.S. soil to be prosecuted before the civilian legal system.
Attorney General Eric Holder said, “The alleged 9/11 conspirators will stand trial in our justice system before an impartial jury under long-established rules and procedures. We will pursue the maximum punishment available.” He further explained, “Today’s announcement marks a significant step forward in our efforts to close Guantanamo and to bring to justice those individuals who have conspired to attack out nation and our interests abroad.”
Five other detainees including Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri, who is believed to be behind the al Qaeda’s plan to bomb the Navy destroyer Cole in 2000 in Yemen, will face a military trial.
