Investigations into alleged fraud in the recent Afghanistan elections are uncovering more and more evidence supporting the claims of more than 2,000 election complaints.
In the most recent turn of events, a tribal leader from the Zaziaryoub district in Afghanistan’s Paktia province has admitted to forging about 900 ballots in favor of incumbent president Hamid Karzai, according to a report by the BBC.
The same elder also admits that his own nephew witnessed a similar act in a neighboring village, where one man allegedly filled in more than 2,000 ballots in favor of Karzai.
In another similar case, approximately 30,000 votes have been forged in favor of Karzai, according to a statement by the leader of the Bareez tribe in Kandahar.
Investigations are currently underway for more than 2,000 complaints, of which around 600 are deemed critical. However, even as election complaints keep cropping up, the Afghan Electoral Complaints Commission has announced that any further complaints will not be entertained anymore, as the deadline for filing them has long gone past.
Election results have already been received from about 60% of Afghanistan’s polling stations, from which Karzai is currently in a very clear lead over rival Abdullah Abdullah.
