Afghan election fraud investigations intensify, unrest continues

Officials handling complaints regarding the August 20 Afghanistan presidential elections have said that they are now looking into more than 560 major allegations of election fraud – approximately double than that reported two days ago.

Full preliminary results are scheduled to be made public by next week, but results will not be made official until all allegations have been looked into. The Afghan Electroral Complaints Commission had said on Sunday that they have received more then 2,000 reports of alleged fraud and intimidation during voting and vote-counting, and that approximately 567 of those have been deemed serious enough to influence the election’s outcome if proven true.

The commission reported a total of 270 of these allegations last Friday.

The latest counts puts President Hamid Karzai at a 46% majority, with Abdullah Abdullah running in at about 32%. A candidate would need at least a 50% count to avoid a second round which will take place in October if ever.

Abdullah, however, has already called the attention of the commission into what he says has been a “massive, state-crafted” election fraud, courtesy of Karzai. Abdullah stated that the ballot boxes had been stuffed with votes prior to the election, according to a report by the BBC.

“My concern is about massive fraud, state-crafted, state-engineered fraud which has taken place throughout the country,” according to a statement by Abdullah.

Karzai, however, denies this allegation.
