Amir Khan Stops Zab Judah To Win IBF Lightweight Title

World Boxing Association Lightweight champion Amir Khan added the International Boxing Federation belt to his collection by beating American Zab Judah with a fifth round knockout of the 12-round unification bout.

Despite complaints from Judah that the knockout punch that brought him down was a low blow, Khan was already dominating the fight. The British champion was landing the big blows even before he knocked out Judah in the fifth. The punch was legal landing below the belt line sending the American to the canvas.

The end for Judah came at 2:47 of the fifth round with referee Vic Drakulich reaching the count of ten. So dominant was Khan that Judah was bleeding from his nose and had cuts in his face. However, the former champion claimed that he was being butted.

Khan was a 5-1 favorite coming in to the fight and used his quickness in overpowering Judah. He was leading in the first four rounds on all the scorecards. According to punch stats, Khan connected on 61 of 284 punches as opposed to 20 of 115 for Judah.

Khan improved his record to 26-1 with 18 knockouts. His lone loss was a first round knockout to Breidiss Prescott in August 2008. He then became the WBA International Lightweight champion by beating Oisin Fagan via a second round knockout. He was fresh from two successful title defenses first against Marcos Maidana in December 2010 and then Paul McCloskey last April.

Amir Khan’s next fight will be in December against either Robert Guerrero or Erik Morales. He is also aiming for a unification bout against World Boxing Council/World Boxing Organization champion Timothy Bradley.

According to Richard Schaefer, Khan’s promoter, the December fight would be his last at 140 pounds before he moves up to 147 and fight next spring at his hometown of Manchester. Khan’s camp is hoping to book a fight against either Floyd Mayweather Jr or Manny Pacquiao.
