Antibiotics from Cockroaches’ Brains

Researchers at U.K.’s University of Nottingham have discovered healing properties in the brains of bugs like cockroaches and locusts.  These insects’ brains and nervous systems killed 90% of E. coli and other increasingly antibiotic-resistant bacteria without harming human cells.

The research identified up to nine different molecules in these insects’ tissues which are toxic to bacteria.

Citing the inspiration of their study scientists said, “Insects live in unsanitary environments where they encounter many bacteria.  It is therefore logical that they have developed ways of protecting themselves.”

The particular antibiotic they hope to make from cockroaches’ brains is for Invasive MRSA or methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, a serious hospital-acquired infection.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says 94,000 people developed a serious MRSA infection in 2005 with 18,000 approximately dying.

To be noted in connection to cockroaches’ hardiness in surviving dirty environments is they are capable of remaining active for a month without food and can survive from mere glue on postage stamps.  They can go without air for 45 minutes and can recover from being submerged underwater for half an hour.  Studies also indicate that cockroaches’ resistance to radiation is 6 to 15 times higher than that of humans.
