U.S. apologizes for inverted Philippine flag

In the recently held meeting of U.S. President Barack Obama with the leaders of the Association of Southeast Asia Nations, the Philippine flag was seen to be displayed upside down.

The mistake caused a little stir to some people because an inverted Philippine flag signifies that the country is in a state of war.

In a statement released by the U.S. Embassy, spokeswoman Rebecca Thompson said, “This was an honest mistake…The U.S. treasures its close relationship and close partnership with the Philippines, which were demonstrated this last week during President Aquino’s trip to the United States.”

Thompson and other American embassy officials said they are going to investigate on how this “unfortunate” incident happened.

Obama and the ASEAN leaders met in New York on Friday to kick off the United Nations General Assembly. They talked about several worldwide concerns, including global warming, economic issues, and counter-terrorism.
