Satisfying Apple’s App Store approval process has long been criticized by developers for the iPhone and iPad as being ‘like trying to hit a moving, invisible target’.
Until recently Australian developer Russell Ivanovic of Groundhog Software was not among these critics, in April he posted a lengthy defense of the App Store approval process entitled, Sorry Media, but Apple isn’t Evil. The disillusioned Aussie, however, was forced to review his opinion when his previously thrice approved iPad app ‘MyFrame’ which layers various tools on top of a digital photo frame was pulled from the App Store.
It seems Cupertino’s digital police have once again moved the goal posts and are currently having a ‘bit of a cull’, in the frame this time? Apps that are ‘too widgety’ or which ‘present desktop like functionality to the user’. At least this was the explanation Apple gave to Ivanovic when they called to tell him that MyFrame was being pulled.
Ivanovic writes: “I see now why people are so angry at the ‘murky’ nature of the App Store, and I’m starting to agree with them. My Frame was approved by Apple three times (once for each version we released), and now, at version 1.2 they decide it’s to be removed?”
