Brussels, Belgium – Approximately 25 people have died in a serious train crash near Brussels on Monday morning, when two regional trains collided.
The collision occurred at around 8:30 a.m. local time in the town of Halle, near Brussels, Belgium. As of this writing, 25 people have been confirmed dead by Belgian national railway officials. A huge number of injuries were also reported, although no official number has been reported as of yet. A number of passengers had to be rescued from train cars who were stuck because of the collision.
According to reports, the time of the collision coincided with local rush hour between the cities of Mon and Brussels, wherein most of the commuters took the train line to go to the Belgian capital for work. Investigators also noted that during the time of the collision, there terribly icy tracks and heavy snowfall which may have impaired vision.
The collision effectively stopped train services by Thalys and Eurostar, and reports also indicate that a number of main power lines were also destroyed or felled in the accident.
