James Cameron‘s epic “Avatar” led the box office with opening ticket sales amounting to about $73 million in the US and Canada over opening weekend. In comparison, Walt Disney‘s “The Princess and the Frog” was second with opening weekend ticket sales of about $12.2 million.
“Avatar”‘s figures have broken the previous ticket sales record for a 3D animation movie. The previous record of $68.1 million over opening weekend was set by Walt Disney’s “UP” earlier this year.
“Avatar” is James Cameron’s first movie after the epic movie “Titanic” in 1997. It is also estimated to be one of the most expensive films ever made, with a budget clocking in at about $230 million.
Analysts, however, are estimating that the film may generate at least $400 million in total earnings after its run, playing in 3,124 theaters in 2,034 locations.
“Avatar” tells the story of an ex-Marine who was tasked to spy on the inhabitants of a distant planet by inhabiting a faux body cloned from the aliens’ genetic material, in an effort to find rare minerals.
James Cameron reportedly started writing the story of “Avatar” in 1995, and worked on it for about 10 years, developing the appropriate technology to create the vast world that he was imagining.
