Are baby slings not safe for babies anymore?

The United States government is set to issue a safety warning to parents who use baby slings, after learning about several more cases of suffocation and death brought about by these infant carriers.

Consumer Product Safety Commission head Inez Tenenbaum said that her office is doing its best to spread the word. “We know of too many deaths in these slings and we now know the hazard scenarios for very small babies. So, the time has come to alert parents and caregivers,” she said.

About a couple of years ago, there had been several reports about baby slings that were not durable enough, causing the babies to fall out of them. According to Consumer Reports, at least seven babies have died and several more injured because of these low quality products.

Tenenbaum said they would make a general public warning this week.
