Diver Yang Yun was participating in a diving contest at Polar Land in Harbin, China when suddenly she experienced painful cramps that left her helpless and unable to move her legs. The contest requires its participants to sink seven metres to the bottom of a twenty foot aquarium for as long as they could without the aid of any breathing equipment.
The 26-year old diver thought she was going to die when the cold temperature of the arctic pool left her paralysed; not to mention that the pool was also shared with a number of beluga whales. “I began to choke and sank even lower and I thought that was it for me – I was dead, until I felt this incredible force under me driving me to the surface.”
However, Mila the beluga whale noticed Yang Yun’s distress and used her sensitive dolphin-like nose and guided the diver back to the surface.
An organiser of the contest said: “Mila noticed the problem before we did, we suddenly saw the girl being pushed to the top of the pool with her leg in Mila’s mouth.”
“She’s a sensitive animal who works closely with humans and I think this girl owes her, her life.”
