The Boston Red Sox is off to their worst start to a season since 1945 going 0-6 in losing to the Cleveland Indians 1-0. This marks the third time in franchise history that Boston began a season at 0-6. The first was in 1905 and the second in 1927.
Swept by the Indians in three games, Boston was outscored 38-16 with only four hits against four Indians pitchers. Prior to the game, the Red Sox were also coming off another three-game sweep by the Texas Rangers.
Pitted as one of the early favorites after nagging Carl Crawford and Adrian Gonzales during the offseason, the Red Sox will next play arch rival New York Yankees for their first home game Friday.
Starting pitchers Fausto Carmona of the Indians and Jon Lester of the Red Sox bounced back from a shaky outing on opening day to pitch seven shutout innings. Carmona allowed only two singles, striking out four, and walking two batters. He bounced back after allowing 10 runs on 11 hits in three innings against the White Sox.
Cleveland’s Asdrubal Cabrera scored on a bunt in the eight inning to score the game’s only run. After that bunt, it has been a bizarre turnaround for the Red Sox. After David Ortiz got a walk from Indians reliever Chris Perez, Darnell McDonald was tapped to pinch run for him. J.D. Drew’s single bounced off Perez and went to Cleveland’s third baseman Adam Everett.
McDonald overshot second base and fell down as he tried to return to the bag. Everett made a snap throw to Indian’s second baseman Orlando Cabrera which barely got McDonald. Even the replays showed that second base umpire Dan Iassogna made the right call.
Boston will be playing their next ten games at Fenway Park. They will play three games each against division rivals New York Yankees and Tampa Bay Rays and cap off their home series with four games against Toronto.
