Poison lead singer Bret Michaels sues CBS Broadcasting and the organizers of the Tony Awards Friday for his 2009 accident that resulted to a brain hemorrhage that almost led to his death.
According to Michaels, he is still feeling the effects of the injury and hemorrhage leaving him hospitalized in 2010. His determination to live and see his kids grow up allowed him to survive the trauma.
Michaels and his band Poison performed at the Tony Awards in June 2009 when he suffered from a busted lip and broken nose as a result of being hit by a piece of the set. He claimed that none of the organizers informed him that the set would be changing after their performance. In his lawsuit, he said that the incident could have been prevented but the organizers did not choose to.
Bret Michaels’ accident instantly became viral on the Internet breaching the 27 million viewers mark on YouTube. CBS refused to give a comment as it is their policy not to respond to lawsuits out of court. Spokesperson for the Tony Awards did not return phone calls and e-mail messages as well.
Speaking in behalf of his client, Alex Weingarten said that an unfortunate accident happened when the set piece dropped on Michaels’ head but instead of making things right, they took the accident as a joke and said it was for ratings.
In addition, he said that Michaels tried to go for an out of court settlement without filing a suit but his efforts went for naught. Weingarten said that the organizers should be held liable for the near death of the singer.
Bret Michaels’ lawsuit did not indicate the amount of damages he is seeking although it stated that because of the injury he was not able to perform in other shows.
