Sales tracking firm NPD Group revealed Thursday that Activisions’s Call of Duty: Black Ops is now the best selling video game in the history of the United States. It topped the market in February and has remained in that position since it was launched in November 2010. According to NPD’s Anita Frazier, it has now surpassed the Wii Play.
Although Activision is yet to make a formal announcement of the figures, the NPD estimates that Black Ops has now sold around 13.7 million copies in the United States, excluding sales from Wal-Mart. The Nintendo Wii Play has sold 13 million copies in the United States since it was launched in February 2007.
Surging to the top in a span of four months is indeed amazing but not surprising. Call of Duty: Black Ops set an opening sale record when it raked in more than $360 million on its first 24 hours. After four days, sales went up to $650 million, shattering the five day entertainment sales record as well. On its first month, the video game breached the $1 billion mark, beaten only by the 3D video game Avatar as the fastest to reach the mark.
In terms of worldwide sales, the record is still currently held by Wii Sports, which has currently sold more than 75 million copies. Some will say that the figure is a little bit exaggerated but the game has been primarily bundled with the Wii console itself, which has contributed to its huge sales. In contras, Black Ops is designed for multiple systems, giving it an advantage over games exclusively sold for certain types of consoles.
Here is the list of the best-selling video games in the US according to the NPD group:
1. Call of Duty: Black Ops
2. Wii Play W/ Remote
3. Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
4. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
5. Guitar Hero III Legends Of Rock
6. Mario Kart w/Wheel
7. Call Of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
