Irking conservative Iranians by condemning the sentence against Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtian an Iranian newspaper called France’s first lady, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, 42, a “prostitute”.
Kayhan daily repeated the insult a few days later adding that she also deserves death.
Ashtiani, 42, mother of two, could still be executed by stoning or hanging after a final review of her case. Iranian Islamic law states that any sexual activity outside of marriage, for both men and women, is punishable by death. Ashtiani already received 99 lashes for having an illicit relationship with two men.
Citing Bruni-Sarkozy’s alleged affairs with Mick Jagger, Kevin Costner, Donald Trump and even that with the French President Nicolas Sarkozy that led to the dissolution of his second marriage, Kayhan daily, and other Iranian papers, gained steam in condemning Carla Bruni-Sarkozy.
Bruni-Sarkozy was one of those who published an open letter to Ashtiani:
“Spill your blood; deprive your children of their mother? Why? Because you have lived, because you have loved, because you are a woman, an Iranian?”
Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast states: “We criticize the policies, manners and comments of other countries’ officials but we don’t think using inappropriate words is the right thing to do.”
