Croatian star Marin Cilic has advanced to the Australian Open semi-final after defeating Andy Roddick, 7-6 6-3 3-6 2-6 6-3, on Tuesday.
The seventh-seeded Roddick injured his right shoulder in the first set and was given an on-court medical treatment.
The American did not easily give up as he dominated the third and fourth sets, and was able to force a deciding match. But despite Roddick’s fighting spirit, 14th-seeded Cilic was able to control his nerves and maintain his composure to snatch the win.
Cilic, whose last best performance was a quarter-final stint at the U.S. Open last year, beat out Juan Martin del Potro in the fourth round of the Australian Open.
This is Cilic’s first-ever Grand Slam semi-final appearance, and he will face either defending champion Rafael Nadal or fifth-seeded Andy Murray.
