Harvey Pekar, a comic book writer best known for his work called “American Splendor,” has died Monday morning. He was 70.
According to the Cuyahoga Country Coroner’s office, Pekar was found dead at around 1 in the morning by his wife Joyce Brabner. The cause of death is still under investigation.
Pekar, who’s from Cleveland, was one of the pioneers of underground comic book writing. His masterpiece “American Splendor” is a comic book series that served as his autobiography and tells the story of his life as a file clerk. It won the American Book Award in 1987. It had a film adaptation in 2003, with Paul Giamatti playing the role of Pekar.
Pekar appeared on “Late Night With David Letterman” several times as a guest. He also wrote for the “The Austin Chronicle” and “Jazz Times” as a jazz critic.
