Jayne Peters, mayor of Coppell, Texas, and her daughter were found shot to death at their home in suburban Dallas on Tuesday.
Police said they were alerted by the city manager when the mayor, who was usually prompt at meetings and gatherings, failed to appear at a city council meeting. They went to her home at around 7:45 p.m. and discovered the bodies of the 55-year-old mayor and her 19-year-old daughter Corrine Peters. Both had gunshot wounds to the head.
There were no signs of forced entry, and the authorities are still investigating if the incident was a murder or a suicide.
βAt this point all we can really say is the investigation is just not complete. There are a lot of things we need to look at,β Sharon Logan, a city spokeswoman, said.
Peters became mayor of Coppell, a city with population of around 40,000, in 2009. She was a contract software developer and was part of the city council for over 10 years. Her husband passed away in 2008 due to cancer.
