An oceanographer with the Spanish government shares that large rogue waves in the Mediterranean occur more often than most think, describing the accident that occurred Wednesday when large waves smashed into the deck of the Louis Majesty Cruise Lines ship, killing two people and injuring others.
According to the Marta de Alfonso, an oceanographer, waves the size of those that smashed into the cruise ship occur once or twice a year in the Mediterranean. However, de Alfonso also notes that there was a storm in the area at the time of the accident, suggesting that the waves may have been stirred up by the storm.
The Louis Majesty was hit by 26-foot-high waves on Wednesday, smashing windows and flooding passenger cabins. Two passengers have been reported dead, with as many as 14 being reported as injured. The cruise ship was travelling with 1,350 passengers and 580 crew members at the time.
