Danny Mwanga, a striker for Oregon State, was selected by the Philadelphia Union to become this year’s first overall pick in the Major League Soccer (MLS) SuperDraft.
The 18-year-old Mwanga said, “It’s definitely a great opportunity and I’m pleased to be able to start my career in professional soccer. I knew a lot about the Philadelphia Union fans and I was very excited to get drafted and to be a part of this team.”
The second overall draft pick was University of Virginia’s Tony Tchani, who was selected by the New York Red Bulls.
In an interview with Goal.com, the Red Bulls head coach Hans Backe said, “We were looking for a central midfield player. We got the one we wanted. A physical, strong one, comfortable on the ball. Even if he plays mostly as a holding midfield player, I could see him as a box-to-box midfield player.”
