Former lightweight boxing champion Edwin Valero was found dead Monday in his jail cell, after he was imprisoned for admitting to having killed his own wife, according to police reports.

Valero reportedly used his own clothing to construct a makeshift noose attached to a bar in his prison cell, to which he hanged himself. Police reports confirm this claim, saying that Valero’s sweat pants were utilized in the suicide.

A fellow inmate discovered Valero hanging in his prison cell, who then alerted authorities within the compound. Respondents then proceeded to swiftly take him down from the noose.

Reports indicate that Valero was still alive when he was taken down, but resuscitation did not succeed, and he died at approximately 1:30 a.m.

Valero was arrested under suspicion of murder when police authorities discovered the body of Jennifer Carolina Viera in a hotel in Valencia. Valero shortly thereafter admitted that he indeed had killed his own wife.
