Another Iowa farm, Hillandale Farms, is being cited as another cause of the salmonella outbreak that had the total of the eggs being recalled to half a billion already, cited as the largest in recent years.
Another set of investigation led authorities to Hillandale Farms when the total who got sick from salmonella enderitidis tripled the norm in the past three months.
The Hillandale eggs in recall also are sold under the brand names Sunny Farms and Sunny Meadow,Wholesome Farms and West Creek. These eggs are distributed in 14 states in the West and Midwest and the vast majority is presumed to have already been eaten. These eggs have been produced since April 9.
The investigators are eyeing the same supplier that both farms (Wright County Egg and Hillandale Farms) use in providing feeds for their chickens.
The source of a salmonella outbreak could be rodents (rodent droppings that get inside the chicken ovaries and gets inside the egg), shipments of contaminated hens or tainted feed.
Salmonella bacteria can also be found outside the shell of the egg.
