Patricia Neal, a Tony and Academy award-winning actress, died Sunday at her home in Edgartown, Massachusetts. She was 84.
Neal survived a series strokes in 1965 at age 39 and also suffered from lung cancer.
In a statement released by her family, they said, “She faced her final illness as she had all of the many trials she endured: with indomitable grace, good humor and a great deal of her self-prescribed stubbornness.”
Neal won a Tony Best Featured Actress in a Play award for her performance in “Another Part of the Forest” in 1946 and an Oscar Best Actress trophy for her work in “Hud” in 1963.
She released an autobiography in 1988, entitled “As I Am,” in which she described her life to be like a “Greek tragedy.”
She is survived by four children, a brother, a sister and several grandchildren.
