Facebook reached a very coveted milestone last week when it managed to surpass Google as the most visited website in the United States for the week.
The social networking giant’s market share of web visitors in the United States had been steadily increasing (and as the graph below seems to imply, it still is!), finally edging out Google‘s 7.03% market share with a 7.07% score for the week ending in March 13, 2010, according to a study by Hitwise Intelligence. Even more impressive is the fact that Facebook‘s market share had increased by 185% as compared to the same week last year. Considering Google‘s 9% score over the same time frame, that’s pretty wicked!
Granted, there had been occasions before when Facebook managed to overtake Google in terms of raw page visits, like Christmas and New Year’s Eve, but this seems to be the first time that Facebook managed to best Google over an aggregated one week period.
