A Nigerian man was reportedly arrested by FBI operatives after passengers from an international flight stopped what they believe was a terrorist bombing attack.
Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, 23, was subdued by a number of passengers of Northwest Flight 253 when he reportedly lit a “small explosive device” during the landing descent into Detroit, Michigan.
Northwest Flight 253 was coming into Detroit from its origin of Amsterdam, in the Netherlands.
The FBI states that their initial impression is that the suspect was acting alone, although that point is still under consideration and investigation. The suspect claimed to have extremist ties, as well as admitting that the explosives he had in hand were acquired in Yemen, along with instructions as to when it should be ignited.
The remains of the suspect’s “explosive device” has been sent to an explosives lab in Quantico, Virginia for further investigation.
