The Apple iPad is barely a couple of days old, and it’s already in trouble of stealing trademarked names.
Fujitsu Ltd., a Japanese electronics company, said on Friday that a handheld device it built in 2002 is also called an “iPad.” It added that the multimedia device has been in the United States market for 8 years.
Fujitsu spokesman Masao Sakamoto said, “The US unit made a trademark application for the name “iPad” with the US Patent and Trademark Office in March 2003. The application is still pending and has not been registered.”
According to Sakamoto, his company has not yet decided on what to comment about Apple’s tablet computer, which was launched this week.
“As we are now sorting out the facts, we have not decided on what action we may take at the moment,” he added.
Aside from Fujitsu, there are other companies that share the name “iPad” including Siemens (engines and motors) and Coconut Grove pads (padded bras).
