George Clooney testifies in Italian fraud case

Actor George Clooney appeared on court in Milan on Friday to testify at the trial of three men accused of exploiting his name to endorse a fashion brand in Milan, Italy.

The Hollywood star made his way to the court room, with the crowd fussing over him and the cameras flashing here and there.

The 49-year-old star of “Up in the Air” told the court, “I came here because I believe in the judicial system and because there were people using my name to take advantage of people.”

The three suspects, Vanja Goffi, Francesco Galdelli and Vincenzo Cannalire, are facing charges on fraud, forgery and possession of stolen goods. However, only one of them, Cannalire, was present at the trial.

Clooney gave his testimony for about two hours. He said the photos of him alongside the defendants were fake. He also said the three forged his signature and use it on several documents, including one for a “George Clooney” fashion line.

Clooney is a familiar face in Italy, after having appeared on a number of television ads in Europe, including Martini, an Italian wine brand. He also owns a house at Lake Como.
