At least 400 giant squid were spotted off the coast of California, specifically in the Newport Beach area, since Friday night.
The squid were as heavy as 60 pounds and were as long as 4 feet. One of these nocturnal sea creatures was first caught on Thursday afternoon, which prompted the anglers to explore the area the following night.
For now, fishermen have no idea when the squid will leave. Newport Landing Sportfishing manager Robert Woodbury said the anglers who signed up for the expeditions were either looking to get hold of an expensive delicacy or “eager to tangle with a feisty sea creature.”
It appears that even after being hooked and tossed into the boats, the squid keep on struggling. “They’re trying to crawl around and blow ink all over everybody,” Woodbury said.
“When they’re lifted out of the water … they become a giant squirt gun. Chances are you’re gonna take a faceful or a chestful of water – and probably ink – when you pull them out … everybody laughs,” he added.
