San Francisco 49ers running back Glen Coffee has announced his retirement from the NFL on Friday, just a couple of days before his team goes up against the Indianapolis Colts in their first preseason game.
In a statement he released through the San Jose Mercury News, he said, “This has been a tough decision for me to make, but at this time in my life I feel it is best for me that I move on from football.”
His retirement came as a surprise to the 49ers. Head coach Mike Singletary said, “I appreciate his honesty and I appreciate him not coming out here and just going through the motions.”
The 23-year-old backup running back is the second player to decide to leave the training camp this week. The first one was defensive end Kentwan Balmer, who went AWOL for three straight days.
Coffee was picked 74th overall by the 49ers in 2009.
