In this year’s Lenten season, Good Friday falls on the same day as Pope John Paul II’s fifth death anniversary.
Five years ago, in April 2, 2005, John Paul II passed away at the age of 84.
Poland, the native country of the deceased pope, will hold a small tribute to his memory, together with the celebration of the traditional Holy Week practicess like re-enactments of Jesus Christ’s death and Good Friday processions.
Archbishop Stanislaw Dziwisz, who was a former private secretary to the pope, brought up the emotional symbolism of Pope John Paul II’s death anniversary occurring on the same day as the Catholic Church’s observance of Jesus Christ’s crucifixion. He made a speech during the Way of the Cross procession at a pilgrimage site called Kalwaria Zebrzydowska.
Warsaw will conduct a similar procession at night.
