Google considers shutting down China site after Gmail attacks

Google Inc. said it may pull out of China after finding out that major cyber attacks on its e-mail service last month originated from the country.

The investigation unveiled that about 30 other big companies in the field of media, chemicals, finance and technology had been targeted by the attackers. Gmail accounts of several Chinese human rights activists were also believed to be among the targets.

The company spokesman refused to name the companies affected, but said Google is working on notifying them and is planing to talk to the US and Chinese authorities.

David Drummond, Google’s chief legal officer, said in a post, “We have decided we are no longer willing to continue censoring our results on Google.cn. We recognize that this may well mean having to shut down Google.cn, and potentially our offices in China.”

The foreign ministry of China declined to provide a comment.
