Google reveals Google Chrome OS (VIDEO)

With the buzz about the recent release of Windows 7 still hot, Google is jumping into the foray with Chrome OS, their own flavor of operating system.

Not much detail is out about the Chrome OS as of yet (it’s certainly not in beta stage or anything yet), but Google did take out a few stuff about it to get a fairly general idea of what it basically is all about.

The Chrome OS will run on the cloud, meaning that it will be web-based and generally run off an internet connection. Which makes sense, considering that the engine that drives it is based on the Chrome browser (which, in turn, is based off Chromium), along with some Linux roots. The conventional windows would be run in familiar tabs (like the browser), and applications will run on separate dedicated Chrome windows (like how Offline Gmail works with Chrome).

It should be noted that the Chrome OS also has some neat integrations built in – authoring a document off the OS would create a Google Docs object, for example – and some apps will also be natively supported by Chrome OS, such as Facebook and Hulu.

Google, however, shares that the Chrome OS would most probably require specific hardware to run it – not just your generic PC or Mac – which may actually raise some eyebrows, but we’re all ears as to what they have in mind with this move.

For the tech-savvy, the Chrome OS source code has been made available today, and you can actually run it on a VMWare installation on your own computers. If you’re willing to try it out, all the stuff you need are available via gdgt.
