Google TV

Google changed the way information is accessed.  Now, it’s planning to transform how we get entertainment.

Google TV would put the traditional television on the Internet unshackled by broadcast networks or cable channels.  Users would buy a TV or set-top box with Google software.  iPhone or Android phones can be used.

TV industry executives fear that Google TV would take a mean bite out of the $70 monthly cable and satellite subscriptions.

Piracy is also being seen because Google refuses to block access to bootleg movies and TV shows.

Most important of all Google doesn’t know how it would make money on Google TV or whether studios and networks would be compensated other than the assurance that Google TV would give viewers more, the same way innovation from Google and Apple transformed the mobile phone industry.

Google’s head of TV technology says, “We’re putting a browser in the TV to enable a whole bunch of things that the studios and the networks are already doing, but in a less disjointed fashion.”

In demonstrations with network executives it had been said that Google TV isn’t very effective yet in correctly identifying TV shows.
