Gov. Bob McDonnell delivers Republican response to Obama’s State of the Union address

The Republican party’s response to President Obama’s State of the Union address was given by Virginia Governor Robert F. Mcdonnell.

Gov. Bob McDonnell delivered his speech in front of about 250 people, which included friends, family members and donors, at the House of Delegates in the state’s Capitol.

The Republicans selected McDonnell as their messenger because of his work ethic. They said he is “a problem-solver who could appeal to Democrats and independents by talking about jobs and the economy.”

McDonnell’s speech touched the same issues as Obama’s address, but incorporated the Republican vision. He said both the Republicans and the Democrats want health-care reform, but their solutions differ.

He commended Obama’s decision to send more troops to Afghanistan, but expressed his concern on the government’s recent actions on terrorism suspects.

In the last five years, two other Virginia governors delivered the Republican response to the State of the Union, Timothy M. Kaine in 2006 and James Webb in 2007.
