Haiti earthquake leaves thousands dead

Tens of thousands of people are believed to have died because of the 7-magnitude Haiti earthquake that hit the impoverished Caribbean country yesterday.

The United States and several other countries have already started relief and rescue operations to aid the survivors of the calamity. Here’s how you can too.

The exact number of people trapped under the wreckage of collapsed buildings and infrastructures is unknown for now, but those who were able to survive are still digging out family members and piled the dead bodies on sidewalks and street corners.

US President Barack Obama has ordered military relief vessels to go to the affected region. Other countries like Dominican Republic, China, France and Brazil have also sent search-and-rescue teams to Haiti.

Haitian President Rene Preval said on CNN he has been notified that death toll could be between 30,000 and 50,000.

Journalist and survivors in Port-au-Prince reported experiencing multiple strong aftershocks brought about by the most powerful earthquake to hit the nation in over 200 years.
