UN Headquarters destroyed in Haiti earthquake

The United Nations reports that their headquarters in the impoverished nation of Haiti has collapsed after the area was hit with a destructive earthquake – one that was even stronger than the California earthquake just days ago.

The five-story U.N. peacekeeping headquarters in Haiti collapsed during a 7.0-magnitude earthquake Tuesday. The U.N. also reports that a large number of their peacekeeping personnel have also been reported as still missing, including Hedi Annabi, the head of the U.N. mission in Haiti.

“The main building that was the headquarters building has collapsed,” according to a statement by U.N. peacekeeping chief Alain Le Roy. “We know clearly it is a tragedy for Haiti, and a tragedy for the U.N., and especially for the U.N. peacekeeping mission in Haiti.”

Rescuers are currently trying to excavate the area for survivors, but so far, none have been rescued. The U.N. office couldn’t readily give an estimate of how many of their personnel are trapped inside the wreckage, but they did disclose that at any given time, the Haiti office generally has 200 to 250 personnel active. Estimates could not be finalized because the earthquake happened at approximately the end of the work day, and authorities have no idea as to how many people have already left the building.
