Howard Zinn, the author of the bestselling book “A People’s History of the United States,” died of heart attack on Wednesday in Santa Monica, California.
His novel “A People’s History,” which was published in 1980, attracted a lot of audience that were interested in left-wing stories. Its total sales reached 1 million in 2003. Actors Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, who spent their younger years near Professor Zinn, were admirers of the book as well.
Professor Zinn was the author of several more books including “La Guardia in Congress” and “ You Can’t Be Neutral on a Moving Train,” a memoir that was turned into a documentary in 2004 and was narrated by Matt Damon.
Born in 1922, Professor Zinn had Jewish parents and, as a young child, lived in Brooklyn. He studied at the New York University, and got his doctorate in history at Columbia University. He taught at the Boston University for several years.
Just last week, his essay about the first year of President Obama’s administration was published in The Nation.
