89-year-old James Von Brunn, who shot and killed security officer Stephen Johns at the Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C., has died, the Associated Press reported.
The white supremacist, who was awaiting trial at a federal prison in North Carolina, died at around one in the afternoon on Wednesday at a hospital in Butner, NC.
Denise Simmons, the federal prison’s spokeswoman, said, “Von Brunn had been suffering from chronic congestive heart failure, sepsis and other health problems.”
A.J. Kramer, Von Brunn’s lawyer, declined to give any further comments and called his death “a sad end to a tragic situation.”
On June 10, Von Brunn walked up to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, carrying a rifle, and shot the black security guard.
In a statement released by the Holocaust Memorial Museum officials, they said, “Officer Johns died heroically defending the museum, visitors and staff. This tragedy is a powerful reminder that our cause of fighting hatred remains more urgent than ever.”
Von Brunn wrote a book, which alleged a conspiracy among the Jews to kill all whites, called “Kill the Best Gentiles” and had a racist Web site.
