The House of Representatives managed to clear a health care bill to the Senate last Saturday, with only a narrow margin of 220-215 votes.
The Affordable Health Care for America Act (H.R. 3962), slated to be the largest expansion of health care coverage since the establishment of Medicare 40 years ago, prohibits insurance companies from denying coverage to anyone due to preexisting medical conditions, and/or charging premiums because of gender or medical history.
Additionally, the bill guarantees coverage to approximately 96% of Americans.
However, CNN reports that the bill might have a hard time mirroring this win over on the Senate’s side, with 176 Republicans and 39 Democrats opposing it in the somewhat Democrat-controlled House.
U.S. president Barack Obama, however, remains optimistic. “I look forward to signing comprehensive health insurance reform into law by the end of the year,” according to Obama.
