Hurricane Alex threatens Texas-Mexico coast

Hurricane Alex, the first Atlantic hurricane of 2010, has gotten closer and closer to south Texas and Mexico’s Gulf coast, causing high oily waves to slam into the coasts.

Michael Malone, a marine science technician, said, “The sad thing is that it’s been about three weeks since we had any big oil come in here. With this weather, we lost all the progress we made.”

Winds of speed up to 100 mph or 155 kph are accompanied by heavy rainfall that flooded the roads and forced thousands of residents in fishing villages to evacuate their homes.

Emergency-preparedness teams are there to help evacuate more than 2,500 people from the Matamoros coastal areas and 13,000 families living in low-lying areas, according to Civil Protection Director Saul Hernandez.
