The Academy Awards banned Nicolas Chartier after he admitted that he urged members of the Academy to snub James Cameron’s “Avatar.”
The “Hurt Locker” producer’s invitation to Sunday night’s awarding ceremonies was withdrawn.
Chartier reportedly sent out emails to Academy voters to “not vote for a $500 film,” obviously referring to “Avatar.” He also asked them to give their votes to his movie.
According to the Academy of Motion Pictures, Arts and Sciences, “Chartier was censured by the executive committee of the Academy’s producers’ branch during a special session on Monday for ‘an ethical lapse’.”
Because Chartier broke the Academy rule that forbids “casting a negative or derogatory light on a competing film,” he is not allowed to be at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday. However, if he will win an Oscar, the statuette will be given to him later.
