First iPhone worm rickrolls unprotected iPhones

An Apple iPhone worm that has been discovered to be infecting iPhone owners in Australia has been reported to change their iPhone wallpapers to a picture of Rick Astley.

The ikee worm, as it has come to be known, is also the first documented worm that has gone rampant for the Apple iPod, and is supposedly written by a hacker who goes by the pseudonym “ikex“.

The worm attacks jailbroken iPhones and iPod Touch units who have enabled SSH and not changed the default password “alpine“.

An analysis of the worm’s code by SophosLabs suggests that the worm had been written by the hacker as an experiment, and also berates users in its comments for not securing their gadgets after jailbreaking them and enabling SSH. According to the analysis, if the users just took the precaution of changing the default password, then the worm would not have been able to infect them.

Some comments left by the hacker read “People are stupid, and this is to prove it…” and “but hey who cares its only your bank details at stake.”

SophosLabs reports that the ikee worm does not do anything malicious other than change infected iPhones’ wallpapers.
