Iran releases captured British yachtsmen

The Foreign Office has announced the release of five British yachtsmen who were detained in Iran after being caught wandering into Iranian waters last week.

“The 60-foot racing yacht was on its way from Bahrain to Dubai for the start of its first off-shore race when it had a problem with its propeller,” said Andrew Pindar, the yacht’s owner.

The group is now onboard Kingdom of Bahrain, the name of the yacht, and is being towed outside of Iran’s waters.

Foreign Secretary David Miliband said he was happy that the Iranians were professional and straightforward in handling the whole issue.

The confirmation of the discharge came after media accounts that the Revolutionary Guard, the ones who stopped the vessel and held the five Brits in custody, said that it would free the men.

“After carrying out an investigation and interrogation of the five British sailors, it became clear that their illegal entry was a mistake. After obtaining necessary guarantees, it was decided to release them,” the Guard said.
