Rapper Ja Rule was sentenced to a two-year prison term four years after he was charged for possession of a loaded gun in his luxury sports car. The multiplatinum-selling rapper actor pleaded guilty in December to charges of attempted criminal weapon possession.
According to law enforcers, they flagged the rapper’s more than $250,000 Maybach sports car for speeding and found a loaded .40 caliber semiautomatic gun in the back door. The gun was not licensed and his charge was covered by a New York law that generally prohibits people from carrying firearms outside their homes or workplaces.
Ja Rule, Jeffrey Atkins in real life, is also likely to be sentenced for his failure to pay taxes amounting to over $3 million in income which he pleads guilty last March. He could be sentenced another three years for that case although they will be pushing that the prison term for that case be served simultaneously with his New York term.
His arraignment for that tax case was set for Monday but chances are it will be postponed to later this summer, revealed his lawyer Stacey Richman. The rapper had been apprehended by law enforcers in the past for assaulting someone in a Toronto nightclub in 2004. He pleaded guilty and was fined $1,200. According to him, he was provoked by the crowd shouting derogatory remarks about his feud with fellow rapper 50 Cent.
Wearing white T-shirt, gray pants, and a gray hooded sweat shirt, the rapper signed autographs before entering the court house. After the sentence was served, he was led away to start his sentence. He will momentarily stay in a city jail before being transferred to a still to be determined state prison.
Dennis Cherry, Ja Rule’s uncle and road manager, and his driver Mohamed Gamal were also arrested. Gamal died prior to the resolution of his case. Meanwhile, his uncle’s case was closed without jail sentence after he met several conditions.
Ja Rule is the latest among a prominent line of rappers to have been charged with cases. Lil Wayne was arrested separately on a gun charge the night Ja Rule was apprehended. He also pleaded guilty and was imprisoned for eight months of last year in a city jail.
Meanwhile, the rapper revealed on the show “Good Day New York” that he had no regrets about his actions. He said that he is planning to make his jail term worthwhile. Ja Rule intends to write a book, get his GED, and take up his guitar.
The rapper might be able to get out of his prison for as little as 18 months by doing good deeds as well as meeting other standards.
Before being sentenced, Ja Rule was able to finish an album entitled “Pain Is Love 2” expected for a late July or early August release.
