Jennifer Lopez Cancels Tour

At a time when artists like Christina Aguilera and even Rihanna are canceling concerts due to low ticket sales associated with the depression Jennifer Lopez had just canceled a $3 million concert in Northern Cyprus due to political reasons.

Cyprus is currently divided into the Turkish-speaking north and into the Greek-speaking south after Turkey invaded them in 1974.  The sole 1983 northern independence was the beginning of such conflict in this island.  The rest of Cyprus, however, joined the European Union in 2004.

In time to celebrate her 41st birthday during the opening of the Cratos Premium Hotel with her concert Southern Cyprus initiated a campaign online to force the singer to cancel her concert stating such acts would show support to the breakaway state.

Amidst the effort of Northern Cyprus to placate and assure her of her safety Lopez’ publicists recently issued the statement, “After a full review of the relevant circumstances in Cyprus, it was the decision of management to withdraw from the appearance.  This was a team decision that reflects our sensitivity to the political realities of the region.”

You might have mentioned that the military junta that was running Greece at the time was in the process of carrying out bloody coup when Turkey (which held constitutional garantor status) intervened. In fact, the violence against the Turkish minority had been ongoing for many years. A UN peace keeping force had arrived in 1964, although this failed to deter Greek efforts to eradicate the Turkish minority.

‘Had Turkey not intervened, I would not only have proclaimed Enosis [annexation of Cyprus to Greece] but I would have annihilated the Turks in Cyprus as well.’

It is unfortunate that Lopez has chosen to mourn the interruption of such a policy.

i did have a hard time editing this piece as i would like to point out a lot of things concerning this “division” but i’ve been limited to the guideline regarding the no. of words we are allowed to post per article.
