In fact, the violence against the Turkish minority had been ongoing for many years. A UN peace keeping force had arrived in 1964, although this failed to deter Greek efforts to eradicate the Turkish minority. 'Had Turkey not intervened, I would not only have proclaimed Enosis [annexation of Cyprus to Greece] but I would have annihilated the Turks in Cyprus as well.' It is unfortunate that Lopez has chosen to mourn the interruption of such a policy.
